Examining our perception of food waste…
Distinguish between food loss and food waste:
Loss occurs at production, harvest, post-harvest & processing; can be a result of poor infrastructure, technology, or low investment in production systems; most critical in developing countries
Waste is more common in industrialized areas; is simply throwing away food that is still edible
One common problem that leads to waste? Our over-emphasis on appearance!
In the US, large quantities of perfectly good produce is wasted every day because it does not look ‘perfect.’ Looks can be deceiving!
